The golden retriever who inspired this village.

A childhood dream
As a kid, I fell in love with Golden Retrievers after watching Air Bud. I begged, bargained, and worked my way toward the puppy I'd dreamed about.
Finally, Chessy came into my life.
Years later, after we had moved to San Francisco, we watched Air Bud together. The dream that began on a TV screen was now curled up beside me.

In India, kids are raised by a village.
But dogs often aren't.
Back then, being a pet parent meant figuring things out on your own. There was one dog park open for a few hours on Sunday mornings. Most cafés, parks, and public spaces weren't pet-friendly. And whenever relatives visited, the first question was almost always, “Can you tie him up?”

Moving him across the world
When I moved to San Francisco, I knew Chessy has to come with me. It took months of planning, paperwork, and the kindness of people who helped make it possible.
Home was wherever we were together.

His golden era
🐾 Leaving paw prints across the Bay.
He chased waves, rolled in snow, wandered through redwoods, sniffed every corner of every park, and somehow convinced strangers to stop and say hello.
Looking back, I think he checked off every item on his bucket list.

Promoted to big bro
🐾 The title he wore best
Chester talked me into a second dog. Shadow talked me out of a third. It’s always the second child. Chester was calm; Shadow was naughty. They were partners in crime, inseparable best friends, and fiercely protective of each other. For Shadow, the safest place in the world was right beside his big brother. Wherever Chester went, Shadow followed.

When everything changed
He was diagnosed with pancreatitisis and advanced liver cancer.
My world narrowed overnight.
Life became medications, emergency rooms, specialist appointments, and countless hours trying to understand what came next. Every good day felt like a gift. Every hard day felt impossible.
I thought I had to carry it all alone.
I didn't.

Chester's people
He had his own rounds to make. His own neighbors, his favorite houses, his regulars at the park. Somewhere along the way, the neighborhood became his. They were Chester's friends first. Then they became mine. So, when liver cancer turned our lives upside down, nobody hesitated.
- Meals appeared at the door
- Neighbors sat with Chester so I could work
- Friends checked in, every single day
- Coworkers gave me grace to put him first
- Our vets walked beside every impossible decision
🐾 He built more than friendships. He built a village.

Chester signed off on it
With this pawprint, I promised myself that his legacy would continue.

Saying goodbye
Chester passed away on Jan 24, 2026, surrounded by love, exactly the way he lived. The hardest part of loving someone so deeply is learning how to say goodbye. Building Chester's Village is how I keep loving him.

Thank you for walking with us!
With love, Sonal Chester and Shadow’s mom and the keeper of their village
